Suggestions for Ammo source needed.

Had a friend just pick up a rifle and now needs to find affordable ammo for it .He is wanting some for just fun shooting and then some hollow point or such for deer hunting .

So any suggestions for 7.7 jap would be greatly appreciated .

Thanks

Cheap is a relative term. 7.7 is NOT a cheap round to shoot, even if you reload. If you don't, then they start at $1 a round and just go up.

Try searching 'Gun Broker' for it...

Here is their site. This is 'version 4' which I've been playing with. Gives it a 'Ebay' type of look.

Here is one auction that starts at $18.50 for a box of 20.

Tell your friend to drop the Arisaka and try finding a Mosin Nagant. You can shoot it all day for cheap. With similar results as the Arisaka.

Search engine for the best prices on the net:

May still be able to find it cheaper at a site the engine doesn't check...but looks like he's going to lose a fortune shooting that thing!

Never buy a firearm without knowing where you'll get the ammo and how much it'll cost.

7.7 Jap? He might of well have bought a Louisville Slugger.

Maybe he can get it rebarreled in .30-06.

Re: Suggestions for Ammo source needed.

Someone mentioned that a 30-06 could be trimmed down in length and necked down to 303 and would work in the 7.7 .Does that sound right ?

Quote:

Those seeking ammunition for their Type 99 Arisakas often manufacture it by modifying 30-06 cases. The widely available British .303 bullets provide a proper fit for the firearm's rifling. Norma manufactures loaded ammunition for the 7.7 X 58mm, as well as making new brass available for reloaders. Hornady also manufactures new Arisaka ammunition in both 6.5mm and 7.7mm calibers. Since the base of the 7.7 X 58mm is slightly larger than the .30-06 (thereby causing varying amounts of bulging of reformed brass), some owners may find it preferable to use proper brass or new factory cartridges. Bullets and powder charges of surplus .303 British ammunition may also be loaded into proper 7.7 X 58mm cases to produce rifle cartridges with ballistics that are similar to the original Japanese military load.
This guy cuts brass down for his 99:

OR, he could put the stupid Arisaka on a shelf somewhere, and chalk it up to stupid hurts, then buy a Mosin for less than what he spent on it, and buy milsurp x54R ammo for 20 cents per round.

My advice, sell the Jap 7.7, and get 2 Mosin Nagants with the money. Probably have some left over for ammo.

440 rounds of hard hitting 7.62x54 for $90 at Aim surplus right now.

:36_1_34:

Didn't see the $100 pricetag... decent deal, but the ammo is way too pricey.

If it has a good bore, I would look into having it rechambered or rebarreled to something else more available. I had a 6.5 jap I had rechambered to 260 Rem which worked out just fine.

Re: Suggestions for Ammo source needed.

I have a 7.7 Jap. I have not fired 80 times in the twentey five years or so that I've owned it. All original, no mods. Mine shoots high, I think someone shaved down the front post. It might be accurate for 300 yds or a bit further out, but I don't know because I've never fired it further than 200 yds.

I love the stock with the wooden but plate thats nailed in place. It is a real piece of History. It's a keeper even though I almost never shoot it. The stock is a light red color with some dark areas.

S&B is good to go, high quality ammo.

It's something like the Federal of Europe.

Re: Suggestions for Ammo source needed.

you can reform 30-06 cases to work IF you know what your doing. The Arisaka is an odd duck as some of the earlier models were really well made, but the late war models can explode.DO NOT RECHAMBER TO 30-06! unless you can read Japanese you wont be able to tell when and where it was made, if you do you may have the mentioned event, not pretty.
